Floored

Today our floor arrived in the form of concrete mixing truck. It only took about 20 minutes for a hose to belch out the entire contents of the truck, forming the slab that will also serve as our finished floor. For the rest of the day, the workers will be monitoring how well the concrete cures, smoothing out any rough spots, and ensuring that no falling foliage becomes a permanent fixture of our living room floor.

Lumber also arrived this morning, (photo courtesy of our trusty neighborhood lookout, Melissa). As soon as the week’s forecast clears, framing will begin. That should take a week, and window installation will take a few more days. At that point what looked like a bombed-out shelter will have transformed into a watertight dwelling.

Next come the mechanical steps inside: HVAC, electrical, and plumbing. Estimated time for completion: two weeks. Once those elements have been inspected (one week), then insulation and drywall can begin, which should take another two weeks. The exterior of the house will get attention concurrently, so work on the siding, roofing, and sewer will take place whenever the weather cooperates.

That timeline puts us very close to Christmas, so if you can’t decide what to get me, consider a paint roller and your free time for a paint party on New Year’s Day.
